Residence Permit

There’s a difference between a residence permit and a work permit. There are residence permits with restricted work permits and those where work is allowed to the full length.

Visas / Residence permits with restricted work permit (frequent cases):

Student Visa / Residence permits

You are allowed to work 140 full days and 280 half days (no longer than 4 hours daily) in a year, and full-time during semester breaks.

Please submit additional documentation:

  • Your university enrollment certificate for the current semester (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung)
  • proof of your employment in Germany in the current year.

Working-Holiday Visa

This visa is given to nationals of certain countries with which Germany has bilateral agreements. The visa is given to you for a year, but the work permit is restricted to 6 months at one employer or a maximum of 6 months within a year.

Please submit additional documentation:

  • Both stickers of your visa
  • proof of your employment in Germany during the time of validity of your working-holiday visa

In case you have an expired work permit - the allowed days and months of employment are over - you can apply for another residence permit where employment is allowed. Please consult an immigration lawyer or search for information on the website of your local Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde/ Ausländeramt).

Please note, the expiry date of your visa or residence permit does not automatically mean you are allowed to work till that date.

If the Immigration office granted you a new residence permit at the appointment, but the card is on its way, please submit to us the confirmation of the Immigration office that may look like this:

We will check the employment conditions on your visa or residence permit together with the provided additional documentation, and will get back to you.

The confirmation of a booked appointment does not apply in cases of restricted work permits.
