Your health insurance number is also called a Versicherungsnummer, but it's not the same as your social security number.
If you are working in Germany for the first time or have never been insured here before, you are free to choose your statutory health insurance provider. We would recommend the Techniker Krankenkasse – here is a link to the online application form.
